NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2023/24 SEASON!

Ken and Gloria Craib Fellowship for Future Theatre Leaders

Stone Soup offers one fellowship each year to a teenage student looking to work professionally in production, design or theatre management.  Our goal is to provide quality training through apprenticeship and hands-on experience over the course of a season.  Fellows complete their apprenticeship with working independently on the summer teen production.

Fellows work on at least three shows during the season with increasingly greater responsibilities in one of the following areas:

  • Stage Management
  • Lighting Design
  • Sound Design
  • Costume Design
  • Set Design
  • Properties Design
  • Directing (Stage, Technical, or Music)

Fellows are assigned a theatre professional mentor and receive additional support from the production team and will gain credits/portfolio material in their field. After the fellowship is completed, students are eligible to work as paid independent contractors for Stone Soup in their area of expertise.

 Eligibility:

The fellowship is open to students ages 13 – 17 at the start of the season.  The student must be able to commit to working on at least 3 productions in that time including the summer teen production for their capstone project.

 Application Process:

All applicants will submit the following for consideration:

  • A letter of interest – this short letter (1 page maximum) should discuss their interest in the program, why they’re excited about their chosen area of interest and what they hope to get from the fellowship experience.
  • A resume – this should summarize previous theatre work, education, and any extracurriculars that the student feels is relevant.
  • Contact information for a reference from a teacher, coach or theatre professional regarding the students interest, dedication and work ethic.
  • Please note that applicants looking to apprentice as directors (stage, technical, musical) may be requested to provide work samples, a portfolio of previous work, or evidence prerequisite skills (like music reading).

Applications are due by May 31st and the fellowship will be announced by June 30th.  Applicants may email stonesouptheatreco@gmail.com for more information

This fellowship is made possible with support from Col. Kenneth B. Craib, Jr. and Dr. Carole Craib.

2022/23 Lighting Design Fellow – Cana Yao

“I found SSTC online because I absolutely loved the theatre production class I took last year and wanted to do more. From the very first time I met everyone, I absolutely fell in love with everything about Stone Soup. Several weeks after I started out as an enthusiastic and awestruck assistant lighting designer/lights operator, SSTC was so generous to offer me the very first fellowship of their new program: apprentice lighting designer. I’m so incredibly lucky and grateful for this opportunity to learn more about a passion of mine, and to work with the brilliant, talented, kind, and creative people of Stone Soup. SSTC took a chance on me and I’m determined to make good use of it. I look forward to venturing further *Into the Woods* and beyond!”

Cana was apprenticed to designer Brett Stegall, and has been an amazing addition to the Stone Soup Team. She has had the opportunity to design in a variety of venues including the Historic Forest Theatre and The Carolina Theatre in Durham.  We are so grateful that she joined us and look forward to working with her in the future as a professional!
